I would like to thank everyone for their advice. Being a new rider and an even newer backyard mechanic I was a bit intimidated by the aspect of tearing my bike apart.
Thanks to this forum my fears were relieved. I took off the gas tank per instructions from this forum. All the other parts were taken off as well after checking here first.
The spark plug was finally retrieved thanks to an 18mm deep-well socket purchased at Advance Auto Parts for $5.99. (Thanks David K)
After installing the new plug, cleaning the air filter, putting the gas tank back on, and leaving those two vacuum hoses I spoke of exactly where they were, and filling and charging the battery; the bike fired right up and rode me off into the sunset.(literally)
So again thanks everyone. The stress of this situation was decimated a lot by the feeling that I was not alone in my endeavor and had the support of this forum. So safe riding everyone. I'm off to see the sights on my "new" 1987 Savage. Paul
